Earlier this week I was sitting at work (I'm a lab consultant in the main comp lab) and a student approached me asking how to create a webbed concept map, complete with arrows, with MS Word. Instead of fumbling around trying to look like I knew anything of what I was talking about, I showed him where to find the Inspiration program and walked him through it quickly and easily. I suggested that he use Inspiration because it was more user friendly than using Word to make a concept map, and he took the advice and attempted it. A few minutes later he had completed his concept map, generally free of anxiety and frustration, and was very thankful for having been shown this new program. This was the first time I had been able to apply my skills learned in class to something outside of our classroom, and I must admit that it worked extremely well. I had an easy time explaining how to use the program to this one student, which leads me to believe that I will be able to use it in a classroom of my own some day with great ease.

Discovery Education website

The Discovery Education website we visited in class the other day simply blew my mind. I honestly cannot get over the fact that Secondary Methods is recommended (or at least was to me) before Ed Tech, there are so many useful websites and program shortcuts that I could've used while completeing the abysmal task of creating a unit plan. Hopefully with this new website I'll be better equipped to make my lessons interesting and interactive. I feel like this one site alone will allow me to greatly expand my classroom horizons.

Inspiration

I had never been introduced to the Inspiration program before this class. That's very unfortunate for me because the program is so user-friendly and useful, it makes me regret all the wasted hours trying to create concept maps before this course. Concept maps are extremely useful for both students and teachers alike; they can be used for organizing a paper, a project, or exploring unknown material. I only wish I had been introduced to the program earlier in my education courses. The time spent in class working with Microsoft Word and Publisher were also useful for learning new short-cuts. Hopefully I'll retain some of these short-cuts and be able to teach them to my future students.

A blog is...

A blog is an electronic journal on a website that can contain journal entries, photos, weblinks, etc. A blog could be used in the classroom as a discussion tool between students to voice their opinions and thoughts.
